Centers for Literacy

To reduce the rate of illiteracy in Iraq in general and the province of Dohuk in particular the Organization Harikar non-governmental organizations and the support of “UNESCO”, in coordination with the Ministry of Education in Erbil and the Directorate General for Education in Dohuk open four centers for literacy to the number of 250 participants and post. Van Directorate General for Education available curricula were identified four centers in different regions by the Organization Harikar as well as distributing curriculum centers by the Organization of Harikar assessed by the Ministry of Education and also distributed stationery to all and supplies Admin on the top four, with the knowledge that the process teaching is very good at these centers. Will train students on life skills and a professional (sewing, computer, first aid) for a period of four months after the end of the first chorus of teaching the basics of reading and writing. The program will continue for 10 months and in two phases

Protection Assistance

visit 1:

Zakho/ Khabir

Date of visit: 18/03/2013

Groups visited: Syrian Asylum Seekers

Focal point: Mokhtar Derwesh Ramzi (0750 458 68 71)

Number of families:  8 families, (23 individuals, 13 Female, 10 male)

Issues:

  • Complaints about  renting rooms/flats
  • High rate of unemployment (lack of job opportunities)
  • 4 families did not received NFI/kerosene
  • One family complained about the house facilities, as there is only one WC/bathroom for 3 families in the same house

Action taken

  • Informing Qandil about the existence of new identified families in Khabir in order to consider their needs
  • Informing POCs about the possibilities to contact local authorities (Mokhtar contact and local office) if needed for school subscription or special medical care as well as the humanitarian organization

Recommendations

  • In order to facilitate identification of previous and new arrivals as well as data collecting, it is important to provide better communication to local authorities and focal points (example give basic information about IDPs and SAS to each Mokhtar during a session, or prepare a leaflet with main organizations contact)

Issues

  • Some of the individuals didn’t register themselves (have no UNHCR form)

We advised them to go to the Camp for registration

Visit 3

Location: Semel/ Miserik/Seizar

Date of visit: 19/03/2013

Groups visited: Syrian Asylum Seekers/ Refugees returnees

Focal point: Mokhtar Dirar Haji Salih (0750 45515 93)

Number of families:  12 families, (44 individuals, 15 Female, 29 male)

Issues:

  • Most of families arrived recently and did not received NFI
  • They all complained about the lack of employment opportunities while they do not neither receive cash assistance nor FI/NFI.
  • As they have arrived recently (one month ago), their children missed the beginning of school year
  • None of them have received NFI/reduction food ticket yet

Action taken by PARC team:

  • Informing them about the access to food reduction card at the camp
  • Informing about the existence of both Kurdish/Arabic school for their children and they can register their children in the school for the next academic year 2013-2014.
  • Ensure that the local authorities (Mokhtar and local office) will inform PARC Harikar for future arriving Syrian families, or returnees.

Recommendations

  • Monitoring the development of the situation of these new arrivals, whether they found job opportunities and received NFI or any minimum assistance from local authorities and humanitarian organizations
  • Ensure all the families received kerosene (as only 2 families received some)

Issues

  • Most of the families were complaining about the high costs of living and the expensive rent.
  • Some of the families (individuals) were singles and not registered.

 

Action taken by PARC team:

  • The non registered individuals had been advised to go to the camp for registration.
  • Ensure that the local authorities (Mokhtar and local office) will inform PARC Harikar for future arriving Syrian families, or returnees.

Location : Zakho\ Dawra Barzan

No. of families: SAS (2)

Date: 20.03.2013

 

Issues

  • Most of the families were complaining about the high costs of living and the expensive rent.
  • They didn’t receive food items and they were asking for assistance.

 

Action taken

  • Informing Qandil about the existence of new identified families in Khabir in order to consider their needs
  • Informing POCs about the possibilities to contact local authorities (Mokhtar contact and local office) if needed for school subscription or special medical care as well as the humanitarian organization 

Recommendations

    Community Service Activity

    • CSA distributed $200 Cash assistance in Domiz Camp (SAS), and $200 condolence for an SAS family in War City.
    • CSA did a field visit with the team for SAS in Zakho district and identified three medical cases and referred them to Khabor Hospital in Zakho for cheap medical treatment.

     

    • CSA paid another visit to SAS in Zakho and identified an issue. A Syrian family, in a rented house, was having difficulty in accessing the owner of the house to let them stay in the house. CSA interfered and discussed the problem with the owner and was successful in convincing the owner of the house to be patient with the Syrian family and let them stay in their house.

On the occasion of the International Women Day, PARC Dahuk have undertake the following activities:

 

7 seminars conducted for PoCs of UNHCR in different locations in Dohuk governorate the seminars presented by Harikar staff voluntarily.

 

The facilitators were focusing during their presentation on the women rights as per law, legislation and constitutions of both Iraq and KR.

 

In addition of what presented during the seminars 150 piece of Kurdish cloths circulated among the participants also Refreshment have been distributed among the participants.

World refugee day

On the occasion of the World Refugee Day, PARC Harikar with support of UNHCR has organized a football match between refugees’ youth in Gregawre and Mesreike settlements in 20th June 2012 at Mesreike football stadium.

The players of both settlements have been selected by the refugees themselves to play the match.

The match started at 6:00pm to 7:00pm. The match opened by the referee. The audience of the match were PARC staff, UNHCR representative, Mokhtars of both settlement and other refugees. The refugees’ players and audience were very happy and pleased with this match and for being a bit away from the working atmosphere and created atmosphere of suspense to win the match and they thanked PARC Harikar for organizing such a match for them.

Harikar distributed Sport clothes to the players, refreshment to the players and the audience under the fund of PARC/UNHCR.

The match ended in victory for Mesreike Refugee team by 6 points to 1 and gifts distributed to the all participated players.

PARC distribution of NFI

In recognition of the importance of NFI and hygiene kits for People of Concern (PoC). UNHCR decided to provide PoC with NFI, hygiene kits and sanitary napkins regularly. PARC Harikar distributed 70 share of NFI to 64 IDPs and 6 vulnerable families in Mesereike, Zakho, Dahuk Center and Sumel center, the NFI consists of 10 items: (6 quilts, 6 mattresses, a kitchen set, plastic sheet, a cooking stove, a water jerry can, a kerosene jerry can, a hygiene kits, a rechargeable fan, 4 packs of sanitary napkin)

The activity was conducted by the Protection and Assistance Center (PARC) run by Harikar NGO under agreement with UNHCR.
